Paul Hindemith (1895-1963)
Wendy Warner, Cello
Eileen Buck, Piano
Bridge Records

This recording demonstrates Wendy's impeccable musicianship and skill, performing Hindemith's principal solo works for violoncello, either accompanied or unaccompanied. The Sonata for Solo Cello, Op. 25 No. 3 is a fascinating work, with the composer's unique brand of harmony, and Warner makes the most of the eerily calm slow movement. Both works for cello and piano are here as well- the Sonata, Op. 11 No. 3 and the Sonata of 1948, showing the composer as a developing master, and at his most mature. Also included are the fun Variations on "A Frog He Went A-Courtin" and the early Capriccio, the closest thing to a pop tune that Hindemith ever wrote.
